Nurses are committed to providing services for the prevention of disease and the promotion of good health to all students attending Chicago Public Schools (CPS). In an effort to ensure that all students are in optimal health and to not disrupt education, nurses collaborate with and foster relationships with CPS approved health care providers that deliver services within the school setting.

CPS has three tiers of School Nursing:

  1. Licensed Hospital Practice Nurse (LPN)
  2. Health Service Nurse (HSN)
  3. Certified School Nurse (CSN)

Duties of the three nursing tiers are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice, district/stated board of education policies and procedure and the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act. These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide first aid, illness and emergency care to students and staff.
  • Provides direct services and carries out goals according to the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP)/504 Plan
  • Monitor and provide appropriate care to the medically fragile students to and from school
  • Performs other duties related to health maintenance of medically fragile students as assigned by the school/registered nurse in the building, nurse manager, or school principal.
  • Initiates referral to appropriate resources for follow up care and/or co-manages the school health needs
  • Coordinates activities of  local school concerned with communicable disease regulation
  • Prepares health assessment on students referred for FIE, triennial and annual evaluations
  • Provides interventions in times of school crisis
  • Assist with screening and provide follow-up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth, and development and other physical impairments.
  • Provide staff in-service programs on health topics
  • Provide health-related classroom instruction
  • Present and interpret health and developmental status of children in eligibility conferences.
  • Manages school health records in accordance with Illinois School Records Act.
Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students in special education.

Nurses are expected to, but not limited to, provide direct services to students with medical diagnosis, administer medication, provide health education, collaborate with the school community to meet medical state mandates, enter medical documentation into CPS' IMPACT Database system, review health records and provide first aid to students. In addition, Nurses are required to complete ongoing Continuing Education Units to provide “evidence-based best practices.”

CPS has 37 school-based health clinics located in both high schools and elementary schools throughout the district. These clinics are open during school hours and stay open later to accommodate the schedules of working parents. Certified Nurse Practitioners are on staff and provide medical services such as health examinations and immunizations and a variety of other services. These clinics provide free to lost cost services and accept most insurance plans.
